Gun Laws and Economy in the USA; Can They Be Controlled

Many in America are making a demand to restrict gun ownership. The recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut has led to a demand by many people to restrict gun ownership. Obama is the one man who favors gun control and it’s no wonder the NRA spent 14 million dollars to try and defeat Obama as per the New York Times.

One fact however needs to be appreciated is that the gun lobby is not only strong but is buttressed by economic figures that will bring a further deficit in US economy. Thus Obama faces a herculean task to bring any form of gun control in USA. Firstly the magnitude of gun ownership will overwhelm any agency. As on record there are over 300 million guns of all types including 110 million rifles, which also include self Loading rifles. It appears the genie is out of the bottle and cannot be controlled.

The arms industry also spans the entire economy. The figures are mind boggling when we see that the estimated revenue generated by guns towards the economy is over $ 6 billion. No small amount. In addition over 200,000 Americans work in jobs related to the gun industry as per the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which further amplifies that $9.8 billion are the wages earned by this work force.

I fail to see how anybody can bring about any major change in policy in the USA. Even if Obama is sincere, I am afraid only cosmetic changes can be brought about and the core issue of guns and their usage by the common American citizen will be hard to curtail. The NRA has strong support among Americans politically and socially   and will not allow any infringement of the basic  tenets of the Second Amendment.

If figures have any meaning its worth knowing that over 47000 Americans have been killed by fire arms during the period 2006-10. These figures are given by the FBI and the real numbers could be higher. The government treasury also benefits with a revenue of $ 5.1 billion which is generated in business and excise levies as per the National Shooting and Sports Foundation.

The task therefore of controlling guns is not easy in the USA as wheels turn in-between wheels and the best of intentions can go to the dustbin. Obama faces a herculean task to bring forth any legislation to curtail usage of guns. Last but not the least there are millions of Americans who really love guns and use them legitimately
